Exploitation of Animals

This evening I was pondering what constitutes the exploitation of animals. It seems easier to answer that question when it comes to identifying the exploitation of people. Today was the Kentucky Derby. It seems to happen so often, that a horse is terribly injured and has to be "put down." Not only must it be extremely painful and terrifying for the animal, but for some sensitive souls like me, it is traumatic to see one of God's beautiful creatures, suffer so for the entertainment of the watching crowds. Millions of dollars are involved in breeding and racing thoroughbreds. Some would argue, that they are among the best "cared for" animals in the world, but the motivation is not the animal's welfare. These horses are bred to perform like machines, and when they no longer can, they are disposed of in some horrific ways. Strange that this had never occurred to me before. Perhaps it was the image of one more horse running on splintered legs, that woke me up. I am just now becoming aware of cruelty to animals, that goes beyond puppy mills and hidden fighting rings. This is something that we can all ponder. While the party atmosphere goes on at the Derby, with smart hats and clothes, food, music and fireworks, how many animals suffer in silence, or are euthanized because we have physically pushed them beyond their limits? Many fatal injuries occur every year, even before the big race. The whip of the jockey, demands that the horse ignore instinct and win. No matter the pain, no matter the cost. Might we find a better way to admire the majestic beauty of the horse? If we knew the extent to which we were lining the pockets of the rich, would we use our time and money differently?
